Leadership Insights From My Cedar Point Rollercoaster Ride

I'm not an enthusiast of scary coasters, but my family convinced me to ride one at Cedar Point amusement park during a recent family trip. This one was unique because the cars hung out from the sides of the rails, making it seem as if you were flying. It had loops and steep drops, but I agreed to take the plunge – with my eyes closed. The outcome wasn't quite what I hoped for—a queasy feeling and no sense of flying at all.

I eventually gathered courage to try again, this time with my eyes wide open. Surprisingly, it made a world of difference. With my line of sight, I experienced the ride in a new light. The drops were anticipated, and the view from the top was breathtaking. And best of all, it felt like... flying! Surprisingly, I found myself waiting in line for a third exhilarating ride.

So what does this have to do with leadership?

1. Embrace the Challenge: Leadership often presents us with daunting loops and drops. Just like my second rollercoaster attempt, facing challenges head-on with open eyes can lead to more positive outcomes.

2. Anticipate and Adapt: When we can see and anticipate what's ahead, we're better equipped to navigate the unexpected twists that leadership may bring.

3. Shift in Perspective: Leadership, like my rollercoaster experience, can drastically change when we alter our perspective. What initially seems frightening may become an exhilarating opportunity.

4. Courage Breeds Success: Sometimes, the willingness to take another ride, even after a not-so-great experience, can lead to incredible rewards.

I hope you will embrace these ideas in your own leadership and enjoy the thrill of your next rollercoaster ride - whether it’s at the amusement park or at work.
