Some Aspects of Our Leadership Impact Are Bigger Than We Realize

Last weekend, I had a blast at the Chicago WNDR Museum, particularly at the Ames room exhibit. The optical illusion you see in this picture reminded me of a critical aspect of leadership often overlooked—we, as leaders, wield a much bigger influence on team mood, tone, and attitude than we may realize.

Attitudes and moods are contagious, and within a team, they often emanate from the leader. Team members instinctively look to the leader for cues, making them a central force in shaping the collective atmosphere. For that reason, I’d like to share some tips I often discuss with my clients.

1. Reflection Matters:

Regularly reflect on your own moods, reactions, and their potential impact on the team. I recommend doing this at the end of each week.  Understand the connection between your emotional state and the team's overall attitude and don’t hesitate to adjust.

2. Authenticity Prevails:

Be appropriately genuine in expressing your emotions. Authentic leadership builds trust and encourages open communication within the team.

3. Proactive Communication:

Shape the narrative by consistently communicating the team's vision, goals, and positive achievements (including small wins). Address challenges transparently, focusing on solutions.

4. Encourage a Positive Mindset:

Instill a positive mindset within the team by highlighting opportunities in challenges. Emphasize the importance of learning and growth, fostering a culture that views setbacks as stepping stones to success.

5. Lead by Example:

Model the behavior you wish to see in your team. Demonstrate the values and attitudes that align with your desired team culture.

By building self-awareness and consciously setting a positive tone, leaders can cast the right shadow for the benefit of the entire team. Remember, as a leader, your impact extends far beyond what meets the eye. 😉
