Developing a Non-Traditional Leader

As an executive coach and manager, I’ve had the privilege of helping develop many leaders, but there is none that I am prouder of than my son, Nate.

Nate and I have been working together for over 12 years as I have provided extensive tutoring, support, and coaching from 5th grade through college! He recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animation and Illustration with a minor in Graphic Design.

Nate is on the autism spectrum and as a result, is a non-traditional learner and leader. I honestly think he has taught me more than I have taught him over our years of working together.  Here are some leadership lessons I have learned from him.

  • It’s important to be authentic. Accept yourself for who you are even if others don’t.

  • Direct communication is effective, even when it makes others uncomfortable.

  • Having people in your life who can advocate for you when needed is important.

  • Taking breaks is vital.

  • There is tremendous value in neurodiversity.

  • Don’t give up on your goals and dreams.

I am so proud of Nate for his perseverance, achievements and his amazing talent in illustration, animation and design.  I’m eager to see what exciting things are next for him as he pursues his dreams!
