It’s Time for Leaders to Put the Distractions Away and Be Fully Present for Their People
As a leader, are you aware of how you are showing up for your people?
Here is a very important self-awareness check – are you fully present for your people and do your actions reflect it?
I’ve seen my fair share of leaders captivated by their phone or computer in meetings with their people (whether in a large group or a 1:1). The problem is even more acute with the increase in virtual meetings, where turning off cameras tempt leaders to check email, IM or even “do work” when they need to be fully engaged in listening and talking.
When leaders don’t give their full attention to their people, three things typically occur:
It gives everyone else permission to do the same thing which causes meetings to be inefficient.
Employees who are talking to a distracted leader feel disrespected, not heard, and may get the impression they don’t matter.
The leader misses important information.
Effective leaders stay present for their people by putting away distractions. They build trust by actively listening, asking questions, and providing thoughtful responses. What actions can you take to be more present for your people?
