4 Limiting Beliefs Tech Leaders Have About Delegation

Delegation can be hard - especially when we are used to doing things ourselves. But the truth is, leaders must delegate to be effective, and it is vital to team engagement. We’ve all been there. Teaching someone else to do something seems like much more work than doing it ourselves.

But what we often fail to realize is that not delegating hurts us and our employees in the long run. Delegating well is key to the success of any leader. Here are 4 limiting beliefs that leaders have when it comes to delegation and how to think differently.

  • I can do it better and faster

  • It’s easier for me to do it

  • I like my way of doing it best

  • The person I delegate to will resent me

Shift from: “I can do it better and faster.” To: “My goal is to support my team and facilitate their learning. Maybe one of them can do it better and faster.”

Shift from: “It’s easier for me to do it.” To: “Taking the time to explain and delegate the task to someone else will free up my time for other tasks in the long run.”

Shift from: “I like my way of doing it best.” To: “I may like my way but there may be a better way. I won’t know until I give someone else a chance.”

Shift from: “The person I delegate to will resent me.” To: “They may resent me more if I don’t give them opportunities to grow by delegating. It will also help build trust.”

Learning to delegate well is not an easy task but is well worth the effort.
